AP: Gaddar to march for Telangana

Hyderabad: Revolutionary balladeer and Maoist sympathiser Gaddar will lead a 400-km walkathon in Andhra Pradesh's Telangana to press for separate statehood to the region. Termed as a great cultural peace march, the 'padyatra' will begin at Manuguru in Khammam district from February 3 and conclude at Bellampalli in Adilabad district by the end of January. A large number of artists, poets, writers and students will take part in the march, the first major initiative by Gaddar and his supporters to demand a separate Telangana. The march will pass through dozens of towns and villages with Gaddar and others addressing public meetings to lobby for a separate state.
Gaddar, who survived an assassination bid on April 6, 1997 at his house in Hyderabad, has been using folk art forms for over three decades to depict the travails of peasants, labourers and other weaker sections. He had joined the movement for separate Telangana in 1969 and formed a 'burrakatha' (folk art) troupe to spread the message. More than 300 people were killed in the violent agitation for separate state. (IANS)

KHAMMAM: Two more members of the CPI (Maoist) central technical committee were arrested by the police in Bhadrachalam on Tuesday evening while five others of the panel taken in custody in Orisssa four days ago were produced in a Khammam court.

Anjamma and Devalia Husandi — being produced in a Khammam court
after their arrest in Rourkela.
OSD (Anti-naxalite Operations) L. S. Chouhan said here on Tuesday that Ivvi Mohan Reddy alias Umesh alias Mahesh alias Prakash and Jade Venkati alias Suresh alias Manganna, both CTC members of the CPI (Maoist), were found loitering around the temple town.
The police on surveillance took the two moving in suspicious circumstances in custody.
He explained that the two persons came to Charla on January 11 along with Siva Prasad Bhanu alias Surjit alias Dhaniram alias Satish Patil, 25, as part of their plan to reach a Maoist camp in South Bastar region of Chhattisgarh. Siva Prasad Bhanu, who was also a CTC member of the party, was arrested by the police in Charla while Mohan Reddy and Venkati gave the slip.
Based on the confessions made by Siva Prasad Bhanu, the weapons manufacturing units of the CPI Maoist in Orissa were raided and five members of the CTC- Mula Devender Reddy alias Dhanraj aliasd Madhab, Dasaram Kanakaiah alias Kiran, Salakula Saroja alias Swathi alias Deepa, Chintakindi Anjamma alias Sneha alias Aruna and Devalia Husandi- who were instrumental for the operations of the CTC in Orissa were arrested.
They were brought to Khammam on Monday and produced in the local court.
The revelations made by Tech Madhu have dealt a blow for the operations of the CPI (Maoist) technical committee, according to Dasaram Kanakawamy alias Kiran, CTC member arrested in Orissa along with four others.
Talking to mediapersons, Kanakaswamy said the Rourkela-based weapons unit was set up only three years ago and its operations were yet to take a full-fledged shape.
"We began with 12 bore gun and planned to upgrade in a phased manner."
Working in isolation
The CTC wing monitoring the operations in Orissa was working in isolation. It had little knowledge about the happenings outside Orissa.
There was hardly any information about the developments in Andhra Pradesh, he added.
Kanakaswamy said he joined the CPI (Maoist) way back in 1994 in Warangal and worked for the party in Pune and other places in Maharastra before being inducted into the technical committee of the party.
Mula Devender Reddy, another CTC member, said that the party could strengthen itself considerably in the Dandakaranya region while the party was not the same in Andhra Pradesh.

KURNOOL: The two-day literary workshop (Sahithi Patasala) of Revolutionary Writers Association, popularly known as Virasam, began here on Saturday against the backdrop of "multiple setbacks to revolutionary movement."
Sunkanna, father of Laxmi, who was killed in an encounter in Prakasam district, inaugurated the meet while executive committee member of the Association Varavara Rao unveiled the plaque.
In his inaugural speech, State secretary of Virasam V. Chenchaiah recalled that after the Srikakulam armed struggle when many a revolutionary was either killed or arrested, the movement rose again like a violent wave out of nothing. He explained that it was not individuals who built movements but people.
He said any aberrations in society were first reflected in literature and writers gave vent to the feeling of oppressed society.
He said the movement of Revolutionary Writers Association made great contributions to literature by popularising local dialects and the language used by common people.
Also, the association moved from "social consciousness" to "social activism" and produced living literature.
He insisted that the members of the association should undertake scrutiny of contemporary literature through literary criticism apart from producing their own literature.

NALGONDA: In a major breakthrough, the Nalgonda police gunned down four Maoists in an `exchange of fire' on the outskirts of Yelamanagudem village, 45 km from the district headquarters town, on Saturday.
Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar said that two to four Maoists might have managed to escape. "Luckily, they didn't hurl grenades on our police team before fleeing the spot," he said, adding that efforts were on to identify the bodies.
An AK-47, one carbine, one stengun, one tapancha, three grenades and kitbags were recovered from the spot but no policeman was injured in the "encounter." It is not clear whether the Maoists, who had suffered a series of blows in recent times, gathered there for a district committee meeting.
A combing (police) party came across them at 3.45 p.m. during a search operation. The police had specific information that eight Maoists had been moving in Gudipally area for the last four days, the SP said. He further maintained that the policemen had to retaliate when the Maoists opened fire on them.
Senior leader killed?
The four bodies were found in four different spots in a groundnut field at Yelamanagudem of Gurrampodu mandal. Currency bundles and newspaper clippings were seen near a body. The police believe that the Maoists have been taking shelter on a nearby hillock for the last three days.
Unconfirmed sources said that a senior second rung leader Betharaju Narasimha alias Mukku Ravi alias Janardhan of Mallareddygudem in Samsthan Narayanapur mandal was among those killed. The SP and the Officer on Special Duty A. Venkateswara Rao visited the spot.

Large quantity of material used for making landmines recovered
VISAKHAPATNAM: A special police party unearthed a dump of the banned CPI (Maoist) near Koyyuru on Sunday and recovered a large quantity of material used for making landmines and gadgets to set the mines off along with some medicines.
In a press release, Superintendent of Police J.G. Murali informed that 100 kg of nuts and bolts meant to be used as projectiles in land mines, meters, switches, long life batteries and other battery cells, wire bundles, screw drivers, cutters, syrups, disposable syringes, etc., were found packed in 11 bags.
Mines found
The East Godavari police unearthed two claymore mines in Gurtedu-Bodlanka road near Irlavada, bordering Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
The mines, weighing seven to eight kg each, had iron bolts, nails and nitro-glycerine and could have caused severe damage. SP Battini Srinivasulu said search operations were being carried out to detect more mines in the area.
Coffee units blasted
Meanwhile, the CPI (Maoist) late on Saturday night blasted coffee pulping units at Teegalabanda and Pedavalasa villages in G.K. Veedhi mandal and took away nearly 350 bags of graded coffee beans with them.
This attack on the coffee units was carried out in protest against the December 27 killing of its top leaders, Wadkapur Chandramouli, and his wife Karuna, in the agency area, even as the Chief Minister was on a visit to the city. He would be visiting the city on Monday morning.
Members of the Galikonda area committee and local guerrilla squad reportedly participated in the attacks. The coffee pulping unit at Teegalabanda was blasted around 10.30 p.m. with the help of a landmine and an hour later another unit at Pedavalasa was destroyed.

KHAMMAM: Eighteen naxalites of different Left wing extremist groups operating in Khammam district surrendered before the Superintendent of Police Rajeev Kumar Meena here on Saturday. They included four members of the CPI (Maoist).
Joga Rambabu alias Bharat and Battu Raghu alias Ravi, both members of the Sudhakar dalam of the CPI (Maoist), came out of the party and decided to join the main stream. So was the case with Uke Rama Rao alias Ranadheer and Maddireddy Ranadheer Reddy, who had been in the fold of the Maoist dalams operating in Wajeedu and Manuguru areas respectively.
Two members of the CPI (ML-Janashakti) Thogaru Kiran and Jadi Ananda Rao, both deputy dalam commanders, surrendered before the police due to ill health.
Two woman activists of the CPI (ML Praja Pratighatana) Thati Lakshmi and Ammula Padma surrendered in the day along with six other members of the party. They said that they were fed up as the party operations were not in line with its ideology.
Mukti Ramadevi, another woman naxalite of the CPI (ML Pratighatana) was among those who surrendered. The SP assured them of steps for implementing the rehabilitation package. He said that many of the surrendered naxalites had been associated with the activities of the extremist groups for quite some time in the district.

Three Janasakthi Naxals killed in encounter
BHADRACHALAM: Three suspected CPI (ML) Janasakthi activists died in an encounter with police in the forest area of Paritalalanka in Kukkunuru mandal in Burgampahad division in Khammam district on Sunday morning. The victims are yet to be identified.
The police seized two .303 rifles, one springfield rifle and two DBBL guns from the place of encounter. A red alert has been sounded in the area as some Naxals escaped into the forest. All the police stations are on high alert to trace the Naxals who disappeared into the forest.
The incident occurred when a special police party was combing the area.

VISAKHAPATNAM: A division bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice G S Singhvi and Justice C V Nagarjuna Reddy on Thursday directed the Visakhapatnam police to produce the entire report relating to the last night's encounter killing of senior Maoist leader V Chandramouli and his wife Kavitha, by 12.30 pm on Friday.
The bench was hearing a writ petition filed by APCLC district secretary V V Balakrishna alleging that the State Government had carried out the killing of the couple in a cold blooded manner.
The petitioner further contended that the couple were arrested in Orissa and were handed over to Andhra Pradesh police a fortnight back. They were killed last night by the police who claimed that they died in an encounter.
The bodies of V Chandramouli and his wife Karuna were brought to the King George Hospital in Vizag after autopsy was conducted on them at Narsipatnam hospital. The corpses will be preserved in KGH till further orders of the High Court and later handed over to couple's relatives.
Meanwhile, balladeer Gadar met Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy at Secretariat and submitted a memorandum demanding judicial probe into the encounter and registering a case of murder against the police officials responsible for the incident.
The Chief Minister assured Gadar that he would ask Director General of Police Swaranjit Sen to issue a statement on the incident.
Gadar alleged that the couple were arrested in Orissa based on the information given by a CPI (Maoist) activist Gopal, who was arrested in that State. They were handed over to Andhra Pradesh police who brought and killed them in Visakhapatnam, Gadar said.
This website's newspaper adds from Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam (rural) SP J G Murali said that the couple came to Panasapalli to commit a 'sensational offence' to avenge the killing of their top leaders.
Speaking to reporters, Murali said that the police intensified search operations near Panasapalli following information that Maoist leaders were holding a meeting. ''The Naxalites opened fire at the police and the latter returned the same in self-defence killing them,'' he said.
The firing lasted for about 20 minutes and when it stopped, the police found two bodies,'' he said.
'Slain naxal was planning major attack'
HYDERABAD: Naxalite leader Vadkapur Chandramouli alias Devanna, killed in an encounter on Wednesday night, had as secretary of the Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBZC), led attacks on Darakonda outpost and other station attacks in the Visakhapatnam agency area and Kalimela and Motu police stations in neighbouring Orissa.
"We suspect Maoist leaders of Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBZC) under his leadership were holding a meeting or planning to hold a meeting to chalk out a major attack. But it was foiled,"police sources said.
To secure his release when he was arrested in 1987 along with four other naxalites, the erstwhile People's War (PW) kidnapped seven IAS officers in Gurthedu.
Devanna was the East Division secretary then. The East Division covers East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts.
A resident of Sultanabad in Karimnagar, Devanna joined the erstwhile People's War in 1980.
He became district committee member of Karimnagar district in 1984. He was shifted to the East Division in 1986 and was elevated to the post of secretary of the division after a year.
In December 2000, he was asked to head the newly-created Andhra-Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee. The Maoist leader was inducted into the Central Committee and made a member of the strategic Central Military Commission.
As he was overburdened with responsibilities, the PW in 2002 lessened his burden by moving him out of AOBZC.
After the merger of various revolutionary groups to form CPI (Maoist) in 2004, Devanna was made incharge of AOBZC as Central Regional Bureau head.
Every central committee member looks after the party affairs of regional bureaux in different parts of the country or states.
The naxalite top gun had a huge following and the credit of building the party movement in East Godavari and Visakhapatnam agency areas also goes to him.
He is reportedly said to have trained several tribals as party leaders in the Visakhapatnam agency area to carry out military operations for the naxalite group
