Mastermind of Jehanabad jail break arrested

Patna, Feb 3 (IANS) A prominent Maoist leader from Bihar who was suspected to be the brain behind the sensational Jehanabad jail break in 2005 has been arrested from West Bengal, reports here said Saturday.

According to a report front-paged in major Hindi dailies here, Ajay Kanu was caught in Kolkata by a Bihar Special Task Force team.

But officially, the state police have denied his arrest.Kanu, who is in his late 30s, hit the headlines after the Jehanabad jailbreak in November 2005 when about 1,000 Maoist guerrillas freed him and other prisoners and dragged away a few convicts belonging to the Ranvir Sena, the landlord militia. He carries a cash reward of Rs.500,000 on his head.

Kanu is considered to be the second in command of the Communist Party of India-Maoist in Bihar after top leader Arvind.

The report said that Kanu along with four Maoists, including a woman, was arrested at Howrah railway station Thursday when they were ready to board a Patna-bound train.
Kanu hails from Chauhar village in Arwal district, a stronghold of Maoists. Last year police have attached his property.
