Kondo Reddy community to boycott polls

MALKANGIRI: Over 9,000 persons of Konda Reddy community in eight Naxal-infested panchyats of the district have threatened to boycott the panchayat elections, protesting the State Government’s failure in recognising them as tribals.
At a meeting organised in Kurmanur panchayat on Tuesday, the community members alleged that Konda Reddy people residing in Populur, Kurmanur, Kapatuti, Gunthabedha, Doraguda, Nuaguda, Manamkonda and Sudhakonda panchyats of Kalimela and Korakunda blocks have been not granted the status of Scheduled Tribe since long.
They said as the State Government has not recognised them as tribals, they have been deprived of availing of government welfare schemes.Leaders of the community rued that although the Andhra Pradesh Government gave ST status to the community after AP-Orissa partition in 1936, Orissa Government is yet to do so.
According to reports, many Naxalite supporters also attended the meeting and a rally was taken out to protest the government’s apathy towards the community.
