eGoM to meet in Feb to curb Naxalism

NEW DELHI, FEB 8: Concerned over the rapid spread of naxal violence in the country, the newly constituted empowered group of ministers (eGoM) on Naxalim is scheduled to meet on February 19, to look into the issue and suggest measures to be taken to combat it. Union home minister Shivraj Patil heads the eGoM, which has finance minister P Chidambram and chief ministers of the affected states as members.

However, ahead of the meeting, the task force on naxalism constituted within the home ministry will meet on February 13, to discuss the issue and set the agenda for the eGoM, the official source in the ministry said.

Last year, Manmohan Singh at the chief ministers’ meeting on internal security had proposed constitution of the e-GoM to closely monitor the spread of Naxalite menace, which he described as the single biggest threat to country’s security. The sources said the empowered group would discuss the special measures required to be put in place to tackle this menace, which has inter-state dimension.
