Bengal Anti-landgrab meet draws crowds

Statesman News Service HALDIA, Feb. 3. — The meeting of Krishi Jomi Bachao Committee at Kapaseria today saw spontaneous involvement of the people of Mahishadal, Itamagra, Bamunia, Iswardaha Jalpai and surrounding areas against state government’s land acquisition plans here.

The CPI-M had held a meeting at the same venue to observe Nandigram Dibas on 27 January. But the majority of the crowd on that day was brought from Haldia town, Moyna and other places with little participation from local people. The 32 mouzas of Mahishadal and Haldia block have been earmarked by the state government for the proposed SEZ.

Singer Kabir Suman, who also participated, said: “The CPI-M has been playing the communal card by alleging that Jamait Ulama e Hind has been instigating the Muslim community in Nandigram.” Mrs Chaitali Dutta, lecturer of Jadavpur University, said at the meeting, “The Left Front managed to hold the common people of the country in thrall furnishing false promises.

The state government has turned into an agent of entrepreneurs.” The Trinamul Congress demonstrated before Nandigram police station today to withdraw the cases filed by police against party workers.

It conducted rallies at Saudkhali, Saharanpur and Nandigram to protest against yesterday’s attack by CPI-M goons on Mr Indra Karan, a Trinamul activist. Mr Suvendu Adhikari, district TC leader, said: “The CPI-M has been trying to spread terror to stop the anti-land acquisition movement in the region.”
