Salim group to go ahead with projects in WB

KOLKATA: Undeterred by the violence at Nandigram in East Midnapore district over land acquisition for their proposed SEZ, Indonesia-based Salim group's local partners on Wednesday said they would go ahead with the projects.

"We will go ahead with the projects at Nandigram, Haldia, Baruipur, but the land acquisition part we will leave to the West Bengal government," Prasun Mukherjee, chief of Universal Success, one of Salim's Indian partners, told reporters after meeting West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhatacharjee.

The Salim group was not in a hurry, he said, adding they would wait till the state government acquired land for the projects.

The government had signed an agreement with a consortium led by the Salim group for the largest infrastructure project in the state on nearly 40,000 acre in July last year.

Among other things, the agreement envisaged setting up of a chemical industrial estate over 10,000 acre, a SEZ over 12,500 acre, an expressway and a bridge.

Mukherjee said representatives from Salim's Chinese venture would arrive here on January 19 and meet the chief minister to discuss various projects.
