KOLKATA, JANuary 9: The ripples of Nandigram were today felt at the CPI(M)’s head office in Alimuddin Street, with a group of students trying to demonstrate and forcibly march to Mujaffar Ahmed Bhawan, the party’s headquarters in the state.

Police as well as section of CPI(M) workers clashed with the students, who belonged to Chhatra Chhatri Sanhati Manch, a conglomerate of Naxalites and SUCI. The incident took place at around 4 pm, police said.

“We have arrested 11 students, including two females. Many of them are from Jadavpur University,” said Pradip Chatterjee, DCP (Headquarters). “They tried to march near the CPI(M) office with bad intention, we controlled them on time.”

According to police, a group of 100 students from the Manch planned to march towards the party’s head office and burn an effigy of CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. The police, however, blocked all entry points to Alimuddin Street after receiving information about the rally. A huge police contingent was also rushed to the area.

At about 4 pm, a group of students started marching from Sealdah towards Alimuddin Street. They were stopped near Entally, where the agitating students burnt an effigy of the chief minister. Suddenly, however, a section of protesting group started breaking the barricade and tried to march towards Alimuddin Street, police said. A scuffle soon broke out between the agitating and slogan-shouting students and the police.

According to reports, some students managed to reach near Alimuddin Street, near the office of ‘Ganashakti’, the CPI(M) mouthpiece. A this point both the police and ‘Ganashakti’ staffers along with CPI(M) workers tried to stop them, when a clash ensued. While stones were pelted towards the ‘Ganashakti’ office, the agitating students were seen shouted anti-government and anti-CPI(M) slogans.

With the entire stretch on AJC Bose Road — from Entally to Bumboovilla — turning into a battle-zone the police made several arrests. The agitating students were brought under control after about an hour, police said.
